VRPs 33rd SCHOOL!
We are very happy to welcome Tam O’Shanter Jr. PS to VRP! Huge thanks to the school parents Swapna Tambe (who will be the School Coordinator), Premlata Surana and Sireesha Utukuri for making this possible. Together they have filled the openings on Mondays and Thursdays so each child in VRP will get two sessions per week from now until the first week of June. Looking ahead to the fall we hope to add a few more parents and community members so if you know anyone who would be available to read near Birchmount and Sheppard please put them in touch!
YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
On Thursday afternoon Marjie and Kristina hosted a Q&A for first year volunteers. A recording will be shared next week for those volunteers who weren’t able to attend. Thank you everyone for your input and ideas. Some of the topics covered were: communication protocol, who picks the children in VRP, is it ok if I have an accent, writing notes in record books, TDSB reading program, picking the right book for your student, phonics – decodable books and addressing behavioural challenges.
MORE GOOD NEWS
When Kristina sent the Spring Update sharing some happy volunteer experiences Principal Bartzis at Ranchdale replied saying:
"That is so great to hear, and is the exact reason why we appreciate the VRP program so much. Thank you for all that you and your team do to positively impact our students."
Christine Arjoonal (SC at Lanor) shared this happy news from her school:
"Ms. Do (Room 4) told me that all but one of the children in her class passed the reading test she gave them last week!"
BELL CANADA CORPORATE ALUMNI NEEDED
If you are retired from Bell Canada we need your help! There are two other retired Bell employees submitting their volunteer hours and they need another to make it possible for VRP to be eligible for Team Bell Giving! https://bell.benevity.org/user/login
PHOTO REQUEST
The VRP photo archives are getting old! Next time you are reading try to snap a candid photo of your reading partner(s) with their little reader. Remember student’s privacy is paramount so make it from the side/back so we can't see the face of the child If you want to get some forward facing happy volunteer faces that would be great too! Please send your photos to Kristina via text (416.220.5928) or email.
