100 WHO CARE

100 Who Care,  a locally based not-for-profit, supports grassroots charities in Toronto. In late September, VRP was chosen for their support this quarter. We are thrilled, as it will enable us to buy the next set of Bob Books (Word Families) to add to your resources at all our schools. Huge thanks to Linton Carter, whom we met through Board Member and Volunteer Elizabeth Morley, for sponsoring us to 100 Who Care!

REACH ALL READERS

You will recall that, in your training workshop, Marjie recommended a book by Anna Geiger as a wonderful source of ideas for teaching literacy skills to young children. VRP purchased 3 copies of Reach All Readers: Using the Science of Reading to Transform your Literacy Instruction.  Please contact Kristina if you would like to borrow a copy for a 3-week period during the year.

ALLITERATION SENTENCES

Marjie shared a great list from Reach All Readers by Anna Geiger, page 74, titled Alliteration Sentences for Phonemic Awareness Warmups.  Here is how to have some fun with your little readers:

Read the sentence slowly and ask the child to tell you what sound they hear at the beginning of all the words. Another great way to teach a letter sound. This activity is done orally. You can print the letter on the whiteboard after you finish so the child can match the sound to its letter.(phonics)

TRAINING VIDEOS

The VRP Training Workshop for NEW Volunteers is now posted on the website for your viewing pleasure!  The VRP Training Workshop for Returning Volunteers is in process and will be posted by Tuesday.  If you were unable to attend your scheduled Training Workshops please make a point of watching as there is new and important information about phonics, unconscious bias and communication.

VOLUNTEER SCHEDULES

Thank you for your patience!  Many schools have delayed their start until after Thanksgiving.  The remaining updated VRP Fall Term Schedules will be posted for all schools next week.  If you have any questions about your individual school please contact Kristina or your SC.
