AWE INSPIRING SCHOOL COORDINATORS
Kudos to Christine A. who started her first year as Lanor’s SC by discovering all of the VRP materials (yes even the Bob Books!) were misplaced during a clean-up over the summer. So, she made special trips to replace all of the missing supplies and did extra work setting up new storage and securing a new reading location for VRP.
SC Marjie at Rawlinson and her super star reading partner Marjika (no it isn’t a typo their names are that close!) took their cleaning supplies to the school, rolled up their sleeves and made a lovely new room for VRP…word is there was even a vacuum involved!
Gateway SC Amanda and longtime volunteer Katie did a HUGE amount of work helping the new librarian sort and organize all of the VRP and other resources that had been left unchecked for quite a long time. Amanda then shared this video with her Gateway team via snap chat. Talk about going above and beyond! Three cheers for all of the amazing SCs who work so hard to support VRP in the schools.
YOUR TOP QUESTIONS ANSWERED
What do we do if the classroom is dark when we go to get children?
Move to the next time block on the VRP Children’s Timetable and take children from the other classroom. If all of the little readers come from one class, try the alternates. If that isn’t an option ask the office where the class is – sometimes they are in gym or music. The teachers always do their best to give VRP advance notice of school trips or special events and there will be days when things don’t go as smoothly as we would like. As mentioned in VRP Training we often have to do our best to go with the flow. Always make sure you let Kristina know if this is an ongoing challenge.
What do I do if the child doesn’t know any letters?
Play word games, work on letter sounds, try Bob Books and always read a good story to the child. Try this easy game: Using the magnetic letters or alphabet cards have the child spell their name and you spell yours; then go through each letter name and sound individually; then choose one or two letters and see what other words they can think of that start with the same sound - you can write those words on the white board or in their record book and read them together afterward. Remember to finish with a good storybook. Before you start reading ask them to pick one letter sound that you can highlight together as you read the story.
This student seems like a good reader, should they be in VRP?
The classroom teachers select who takes part in VRP. Please keep in mind, these are early days in the grade 1 and 2 school year. If you think a student is too advanced and perhaps shouldn’t be in VRP please contact Kristina.
Is it ok to read if my partner isn’t there?
ABSOLUTELY! Please refer to the VRP Volunteer Manual: Collect one child for each session, remembering to read in open/public area. Important: After reading sessions please report partner absence to School Coordinator or Kristina for follow up.
WHEN IN DOUBT
If you aren’t sure about something please check the VRP Volunteer Manual. If you think it would help to have a printed copy in the VRP folder at your school please let Kristina know.
