BOOK REVIEW
Huge thanks to Judy Moncik, volunteer and SC at Gosford, for sharing her thoughts and some highlights after reading Reach All Readers. Judy found the book to be “a fantastic resource even for me a "seasoned teacher".
Curious? Please add your name to the list of volunteers who would like to borrow this book.
WHY IS THIS CHILD IN VRP?
Joan Weppler has been with VRP since 2018 and when asked if her email could be shared in NEWS she replied “For sure…In the years I have been volunteering, this is my first encounter with such a situation, so I was fascinated that someone else had the same experience.”
This was her most recent experience with a good reader:
“Kristina, further to your "Top Questions" in the recent NEWS, I had a young boy last week who was an excellent reader — reading at Grade One level and beyond. Fortunately a reading specialist came into the room as he was finishing, and I asked her if VRP was right for him. She had him read a page, was impressed, then tested his comprehension. That was the issue! He can decode, but he has no understanding of what he is reading, cannot answer simple questions about the content, etc. This may not be the case with all apparently "good" readers, but certainly something to check for.”
SMILE FILES
“You are always asking for anecdotes, so I thought I would tell you about a young reader who joined me for the first time at Ogden P.S. this Tuesday: “Finally!“ she said, “it’s my turn! I’ve been waiting for this my whole life!” I hope I lived up to her expectations!” Kathy Peel (Oakridge)
ANOTHER THOUGHT FROM OAKRIDGE
Anna Homem (Oakridge) wrote that she is finding the Bob Books quite useful “…I will continue to start with them every session and have them read them a few times. These kids want to read real story books with a storyline so I am really dividing my reading time with them, with me reading them a story and promoting they join in with the three two and four letter words they have reviewed with me.
It’s a different challenge for sure.
But when you have a kid that says every time I read with them that they “want to read a story to my mum” that is inspirational and we will get there!!!
