RECORD BOOKS: A SIMPLE TOOL THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE
VRP Record Books (also known as sticker books) are important to the children and your reading partners! These little books serve as a key communication tool, helping volunteers work as a team and keep our little readers on track week to week. By recording what happens in each session, volunteers can quickly see progress, note challenges and build on what the child worked on previously.
Record Books belong to the children in VRP. At the end of the year they go home with the child as part of their VRP ‘graduation’, which means families, teachers and – most importantly – the children will get to read every page. Thoughtful notes become a record of effort, encouragement and success that children will feel proud of.
When writing in Record Books, please keep comments positive, helpful and family friendly. Wherever possible print instead of using cursive so the children can read the notes themselves.
If you are looking for ideas, be sure to review Writing Notes in Record Books which includes great examples of appropriate and encouraging feedback. Taking a few moments each session to write meaningful notes helps volunteers stay connected, supports each child’s learning and creates a keepsake the children will treasure long after the program ends. (when Kristina asked her daughter Jayme about her VRP book she said “pretty sure I still have that in my desk…” Jayme did VRP when she was in grade 2, she is currently in grade 11!)
COVERAGE NEEDED AT A FEW SCHOOLS
Even if you can only spare one afternoon, please look below and get in touch if you can help!
Danforth Gardens desperately needs someone to cover an extended vacation for Tuesday afternoons in February and March (Feb, 10, 17, 24 and March 3, 10). Contact Kristina.
John English needs someone to read on Monday afternoons? We have a new volunteer but they don’t have their VSC yet. Can you help? Contact School Coordinator Kendall Franklin.
Vradenburg needs coverage for an extended vacation on Monday afternoons starting asap! The dates are: February 23, March 2, 9, maybe the 23rd. Contact School Coordinator Barb Long.
VRP’S LOVE FOR LITERACY MONTH
VRP’S Annual Fundraiser is “Love for Literacy Month”. Each February we ask friends and supporters to give what they can so that we can continue to read in all the schools that ask for the program. Be sure to watch your inbox and NEWS for more important updates.
TWO MORE NEW SCs
Once again VRP is thrilled to welcome more volunteers to the special role of School Coordinator for their school. Huge thank you to: Priya Kesavan (Highland Heights), Jacquie Mitchell (Derrydown). All volunteers are encouraged to ask about being SCs. Help is still needed for: Birch Cliff Heights, Danforth Gardens, Donwood Park, RH McGregor and Twentieth Street. Please call Kristina 416.220.5928 with your questions.
