FALL TERM FAQs
Q: What should I do if the child doesn’t know any letters?Start with playful, supportive activities!
Try word games, focus on letter sounds, and consider using Bob Books.
A simple game to try:
Use magnetic letters or alphabet cards to spell out your name and the child’s name.
Go through each letter’s name and sound.
Pick one or two letters and ask the child to think of other words that start with the same sound.
Write those words on the whiteboard or in their record book and read them together.
Always end with a great storybook! Before reading, ask the child to choose one letter sound that you can highlight as you read aloud.
Q: This student seems like a good reader—should they be in VRP?Remember, classroom teachers decide which students participate in VRP.While some may seem advanced, it’s still early in the school year for Grades 1 and 2. If you’re unsure or have concerns, please reach out to Kristina.
Q: Can I still read if my partner isn’t there?Absolutely!Just follow these steps:
Read with one child at a time, in an open/public area.
After your session, report your partner’s absence to the School Coordinator or Kristina for follow-up.
WHEN IN DOUBT
If you aren’t sure about something please check the VRP Volunteer Manual.
ANOTHER FUN WAY TO USE A STORYBOOK
Thanks to Christine Haggarty (John English) for sharing her happiness and this fun, simple way to incorporate phonics:
It's SO good to be back reading again!
This may be an old idea for you experienced folks, but I spontaneously tried it yesterday and it was fun.
After my little reader had worked hard at some basic alphabet work, I pulled out the first Fly Guy book - Hi! Fly Guy to read to her. As we read through It, I slowed to let her try and get the easier words. I then had her write "Buzz" and " Fly Guy" so she'd know them. Then the fun. We went back through the whole story and on each page she picked out every instance of "Buzz" and "Fly Guy". She really enjoyed this game.
KEEPING VRP TIDY
As sessions get busier and we all settle into our weekly reading routines, please take a few extra minutes to help keep our space organized for everyone. Be sure to return books and materials neatly to the bins provided. Leveled books should always be placed back in alpha/numeric order. If you don’t see the level on the front or inside cover, check the back cover—it’s usually there. A little effort goes a long way in helping all volunteers have a smooth and enjoyable experience. Thank you!
MEET KELLI DONNELLY – VRP’S FIRST REGIONAL COORDINATOR!
As VRP continues to grow, we’ve recognized the need for more support on the administrative side—and we’re thrilled to have Kelli leading the way in this new role. She’s helping to shape what the position will look like moving forward, and we couldn’t ask for a better person to pilot it. If you’ve gone through training or read our NEWS updates, you’ve probably come across Kelli’s name! In addition to being one of our dedicated weekly readers, Kelli is also serving as VRP’s very first Regional Coordinator.
Here’s a little more about Kelli:
October 2016 was the start of my retirement from salaried work. I have been volunteering with VRP since Mar-2017.
I worked in the Healthcare sector for 22 years supporting specialized software for cancer chemotherapy treatments which is still in use by some Ontario hospitals.
I have been fortunate enough to travel to many countries but now am happy to spend time travelling in Canada (left the best for last!).
My favourite pastimes are volunteering with VRP, lunching with friends, dog-sitting my sisters Jack Russell, Mo-Z and driving fast cars!*
I consider my VRP duties reading Tuesday mornings at Lynnwood Heights Junior Public School an anchor for my week. Non VRP duties and responsibilities I plan around those reading sessions.
*side note from Kristina: with Kelli’s help and encouragement I booked my brother to drive an Ariel Atom racetrack experience. I think next time I should drive too! Who wants to join me?
