ON DYSLEXIA

Dyslexia is estimated to afflict between 10 and 20 percent of the world's population.  Chances are, you will see it sometime in your reading with VRP.  I highly recommend this 35-minute audio chat (from the American Psychological Association) with up-to-date information from an expert in the field:

You will hear Dr. Tim Odegard discuss Dyslexia facts and common misunderstandings.  He describes how reading difficulties can affect a child’s self-confidence and discusses the interventions which work best. Notably, Dr. Odegard himself suffers from dyslexia.    

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE ROLE OF VRP AT YOUR SCHOOL

Already this year we are hearing how grateful the schools are for all of the support you give students during VRP.  We also know that many of you volunteer in other ways in the school e.g. lunchroom, classroom, music class, etc.

As you know, VRP is invited into the school for the specific purpose of helping struggling readers.   Hence it is important that your work with us be separate and distinct from other school activities you may be helping with. So please sign in/out as “VRP” only during your scheduled reading times.  Any additional volunteering would be arranged separately with school staff or administration, and you would sign in differently at those times.

This enables us to stay consistent with VRP policy, which asks volunteers to maintain minimal contact with teachers and to avoid disrupting classroom activities or other school routines. Thank you for helping us keep our program running smoothly and respectfully within each school community.
