WELCOME CRESCENT TOWN AND SECORD ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Special thank you to Marjie Calla who started the week with a special Zoom New Volunteer Training Workshop to welcome Crescent Town volunteers. All thirteen registered volunteers attended and they will start reading in April! The team of parent volunteers at Secord is also getting ready to read. On Wednesday morning Kristina was met with warmth and enthusiasm when she visited the schools to set up the reading spaces. And, she is pleased to report the new reading stations have access to excellent reading resources! VRP is grateful to the new groups of community volunteers who made it possible for us to offer the program at their schools.
LOVE FOR LITERACY MONTH
Our Love for Literacy Month fundraiser has been incredibly successful again this year, and we
are within $2,000 of our $25,000 target with some donations still coming in. VRP is fortunate
to have so many supporters who value literacy and who want all our children to develop the
skills they need to be successful in school and in life. Love of reading is a lifelong gift. Thanks to
you all for your contribution to our success!
CONGRATULATIONS STACEY CLINE
VRP offers heartfelt congratulations to Gosford volunteer Stacey Cline who is the newly elected public school Trustee for Ward 11!
SOUND MAPPING
Here is a taste of Marjie Calla’s helpful new article introducing Sound Mapping:
My new obsession is teaching spelling so I’ve been listening to some relevant podcasts and incorporating what I’ve learned into my work with the children. Now, I’m using sound mapping quite regularly.
Although most of the half hour spent with the children is on reading, I like to include a bit of writing and spelling at the beginning or ending of the session. I find many of the children enjoy the physical act of printing, and especially enjoy working on the whiteboard with colourful markers. You might also find Sound Mapping helpful.
