HOOKED ON PHONICS
At this time of the year you might be looking for something new or just a little something to refresh your reading sessions. Take a look at this short video and see how Marjie incorporates phonics into a reading session. Maybe borrow one of her games or ideas before you read your storybook each session. Do you have a favourite phonics game or tool that you use? Please email Kristina so it can be shared with your fellow volunteers!
FAMILY LITERACY DAY
Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities. The Family Literacy Day 2025 Theme is Learn to be Green, Together so if you’re reading this week try weaving some nature and “green themes” into your sessions.
VOLUNTEEERS NEEDED
VRP has been invited to more schools! There is one near Martin Grove and Steeles and another near Victoria Park and Danforth. If you know anyone who loves children, loves to read and would be able to volunteer at either of these locations please encourage them to join VRP! Just cut and past THIS LINK into an email so they can complete our short online form. We also continue to search for volunteers to fill openings at several of our existing schools: Highland Heights (Monday and Tuesday afternoons);Ranchdale (Thursday mornings), Lynnwood Heights (Thursday mornings); Vradenberg (Thursday afternoons).
We will close this issue of NEWS with a reminder to send us your anecdotes about VRP, fun ideas and games you use with the children and other volunteer updates. THE VRP ANNUAL FUNDRAISER LOVE FOR LITERACY MONTH starts February 1st with a $25,000 target!
