SELECTING BOOKS FOR VRP SESSIONS

The books used in VRP are selected from the school libraries and/or resources provided by the teachers with students participating in VRP. If you bring special books from home or the local library, please be sure to include them in the array of 5-6 books that you put out for your reading sessions.  Now that you are more familiar with what your little readers enjoy be sure to include a favourite as well as some new titles and non-fiction too!  Never assume what a child likes – always offer them the choice of which book to read that day.  If they don’t feel like reading let them pick which book you will read to them.  Remember the first part of the VRP mission is “to develop a love of reading” and this happens every time you and the little reader have fun together!

TIDY UP

Thank you to the SCs who are hard at working organizing and updating supplies for next term.  VRP asks that all volunteers take an extra few minutes at the end of their VRP time to put the leveled books back in order and leave reading materials organized for your fellow volunteers.  If you do not have an SC and need supplies please email kristina@volunteerreaders.ca

MARJIE MADE PIZZA IN VRP?

Marjie wanted to share this with everyone (and yes this will be added to the VRP Favourites list too!)

I'm always on the lookout for good books to read and work with our wonderful little readers.

This week, I found quite a treasure.

Amanda Minuk is a local author, living in Toronto in the west end near me. She has written a series of books.

I bought Hello Pizza and tried it out on five children this week. It is a step by step recipe book for making pizza. There are only a few words on each page with delightful illustrations and many opportunities for using phonics and blending. With help, even my very early readers could figure out words such as mix, chop, hello and of course pizza. Every child could relate to this fabulous book.

Of course I had to buy Hello Cookie and Hello Burger and plan to give them to my youngest nieces and nephews. I'm relieved that I got my Christmas shopping started!

WINTER TERM SCHEDULES

The VRP Fall Term officially ends on Friday December 6th but some schools who started later will continue for an extra week.  Winter Term schedules are in the works and will be posted by December 13th.  Thank you for confirming your availability with your SC and Kristina.  The children will be excited to see you again starting Monday, January 6, 2025!

A friendly reminder to send us NEWSworthy items and your anecdotes about VRP, the children and schools.  We post NEWS on the website on Fridays (except during holidays) and hope you’ll continue to check it regularly.
